    BASP 3D-Display -

Website Image

From a set of irregulary spaced data points with coordinates in the plane, a smooth surface is to be fitted to these points. Typical content of a point might be a count of the number of types at that point, representing the local richness of each point, with the surface estimating the distribution of richness over the entire area. If the content is the value of the position in a seriation, then the surface might represent a prediction of chronological distribution over an area. If the content represents presence in a cluster, then the surface might show the scope of each cluster. Any data which can be entered into Winbasp and which contains coordinate information can be displayed as a colored contour plot, a meshed shaded contoured surface or a number of other variants.

Contour diagrams of find abundances are easily constructed with the new three dimensional display program. Contours may also be filled with color and/or displayed as a shaded surface, if desired.

    BASP Airphoto -

Website Image

An estimated 5,000,000 images made since the 1920's in the European archives represent an enormous amount of data which may never be recaptured under controlled conditions. It is the goal of AirPhoto to deal with this kind of image within the limits of the data and the financial limits of most archaeological institutions and private investigators by non-photogrammetrists.

AirPhoto provides a useful tool for archaeologists (and others) without large amounts of money to spend on user-hostile photogrammetric hardware or expensive software which will enable them to deal with a reasonable number of the many aerial images which have accumulated over the years using modest PC's and peripherals.

    BASP CastCorrect -

Website Image

Almost all color transparency films, color print papers and color negative films use a multilayer subtractive colour construction similar to that shown above.

The uppermost layer contains a yellow dye whose density is proportional to the amount of blue light, the middle layer has a magenta dye with density proportional to green light, and the lowermost layer contains a cyan dye with density proportional to the red light during exposure. A yellow filter layer prevents blue and ultra-violet light from reaching the two lower layers. A positive orange masking layer is also usually present in modern colour negative films to correct for imperfections in the response of the cyan dye.

All colour dyes have limited lifetimes since their molecules break down under the influence of temperature, light and reaction with adjacent materials in the layers in the film. The cyan dye which is responsible for the red colour in an image was especially unstable in films manufactured prior to new developments in the mid-1980's.

Historic Artifact Research Database (SHARD) -

Website Image

We developed our relational database SHARD to provide a consistent and (mostly) idiot?proof system to catalog artifacts from mid?19th to early?20th?century archaeological sites and create data tables that facilitate intra? and inter?site comparisons.

While the ASC has been excavating urban sites since the 1970s, the impetus to create SHARD and its predecessors came from a series of hugely productive archaeological projects in the 1990s and early 2000s sponsored by the California Department of Transportation. These massive San Francisco Bay Area undertakings required a whole new way of recording and tabulating the nearly 1,000,000 individual items recovered from the excavations.
SHARD is built on MS Office Access 2003, so you’ll need that program to run it. Everyone is free to use, reproduce, and adapt SHARD as best suits his or her needs. Please give proper credit when you use SHARD and when you cite or reproduce portions of the How-to Manual.
