With regard to using metal detectorists on excavation sites (who are not employed by the archaeologists) I recall seeing something about wording for a recommended agreement to be drawn up covering claims of treasure trove - something intended to prevent unseemly disagreements in the event of treasure being discovered (as happened on at least one site I beleive). Can anyone point me in the direction of where this was mentioned, whether it was on BAJR or otherwise?
Having seen discussion in some other threads about archaeologists and people employed on archaeological projects not being able to claim treasure trove I wonder if it necessary. Presumably if the metal detectorist were not an employee it would?

Several commerical archaeological units have separately developed their own document for this issue. It is really only used when the units are using local detectorists (unpaid) on projects and wish to avoid any argument regarding claims of finder's rights made under the Treasure Act.

That's exactly what I was thinking of, but I was sure someone had posted a sort of sensible template for such a document somewhere. There is some useful stuff in the Treasure Act text at least. |

Had similar at Corfe Castle last year. Document said.....
"
FINDS & TREASURE
By virtue of your engagement as a volunteer registered to undertake the collection of finds on the above named project under the direction of P**** W******* of Dorset County Museum,you waive all claims of ownership to any find made during your work or payment resulting from such a find.Any find which is not the property of the landowner,or any reward resulting from any find made during the course of your work will be passed to P**** W*******,the Director.P**** W******* will hold all finds from excavation on behalf of the landowner,J******* R****.
There was then a covering paragraph regarding contacting the Director immediately should a treasure find be made.

That sounds good. I get the impression from the treasure act that pretty much any signed agreement will do although as people on archaeological projects can't claim it isn't necessarily essential, just useful. |

All the detectorists so far asked, have never even thought they could.
They felt that as part of the team, they worked by the same rules. How about that for goodwill?

I guess it depends on how much they have been involved in such things and how well you know them. If they are effectively strangers then it is probably a good idea. |

Red Earth,
I`ve e-mailed a scan of the whole document to BAJR. The basic deal was we (detectorists) signed a register & were given a copy of the document,that saved naming each individual on the letter.From a personal perspective I had no issues with the deal as it gave us access to a fantastic site.The only down side was that e-mails to Dorset County Museum & the local FLO haven`t even been replied too. All I wanted was a picture of the Constantine bronze that looked as though it had just fell out of the mint...<insert sobbing smiley here>. Either way I`ll be back there this year all being well.
