IRAQI ARCHAEOLOGISTS' ANGER OVER NEW CONSTITUTION

The new Iraqi constitution has been criticized by Iraqi archaeologists who say a federal Iraq will leave the country’s ancient past at the mercy of regional administrations rather than under central government control. The Head of the Antiquities Department of the Iraq Museum Dr Donny George led a demonstration against the constitution this month and said: 'Our national wealth of archaeological riches will be divided among these regions and subject to the whims of their governors and administrations.' He added that this would be a heavy blow to Iraq’s heritage. The archaeologists have sent a statement to the National Assembly lambasting the constitution’s failure 'to mention in any of
its articles that the utilization of Iraq's ancient civilizations, archaeological sites, heritage and archaeological riches is a prerogative of the central government.'
