Archaeologists against war
-
Archaeologists have got together to campaign
against war with Iraq. Archaeologists Against War is 'an organisation
for archaeologists who are opposed to war, the destruction of
heritage, the exploitation of professional diggers, establishment
control over archaeology, and the abuse of the past to justify
imperialism in the present.' It is a 'loose, open, democratic
grouping that links together archaeologists and other heritage
sector workers,' say the organisers.
Two
dozen archaeologists marched on the February anti-war demonstration
in London under a banner showing a trowel breaking a bomb. Two
million protesters took part in total, with millions more across
the world. Neil Faulkner said, 'There was a tremendous excitement
that we really could win. We have an email list of about 100,
including some from abroad. A university in California even asked
if it was okay to have an AAW banner on the San Francisco demo,
so already we're a global organisation!'
The Digger fully supports this initiative,
and we urge readers to join Archaeologists against War. This
is a war about oil and US dominance that will kill thousands
of innocent Iraqis and wreck archaeological sites dating the
origins of civilisation.

A newsletter will be launched soon, with
a conference in May. More protests are planned the day war is
declared.
