Welsh Trust saved............. for Now

Glamorgan & Gwent Archaeological Trust has been saved from bankruptcy by a last minute deal with Newport city council. The council had been refusing to pay £31,000 that the Trust needed to pay the salaries of its 20 staff. The money related to work that the Trust had undertaken on the rare 15th century ship discovered unexpectedly during the construction of a new arts centre in Newport last year.

However, a bill for £102,000, also for work on the ship, remains outstanding. TrusteeNewport Ship chairman Bob Trett said, 'We are obviously in dispute about the larger sum but I am relieved, it is enough to keep us in business.' The chairman of the Friends of the Ship group, Simon Rutherford, which headed the campaign to save the ship, said: 'It seems extraordinary that the council would risk bankrupting the archaeological experts.' The Trust provides planning advice for 12 authorities across south Wales.

A spokeswoman for the authority said it was obliged to ensure 'efficient and effective use of public money' and act in the best interests of Newport.
