Warwickshire County Council's Archaeological Information and Advice team is a small team that forms part of the Landscape, Ecology and Historic Environment service. We manage and maintain the Warwickshire Historic Environment Record and provide archaeological planning advice to a number of Local Planning Authorities in Warwickshire. We also manage and maintain the Solihull HER and provide Archaeological Planning Advice under an SLA with Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council.
We are seeking to appoint a qualified archaeologist to undertake a range of professional duties. The postholder will primarily contribute towards the maintenance and development of the Historic Environment Records and assist the Archaeological Information and Advice team with their work.
Under the supervision of the HER Manager duties will comprise updating and adding historic environment records, dealing with visitors to the HER, supervising volunteers and undertaking searches for customers using the exeGesIS HBSMR database software and MapInfo GIS. The post holder will help formulate responses to consultations and respond to applications and requests for information under Countryside Stewardship Schemes.
They may also be an opportunity to respond to some planning-related enquiries from planning authorities, developers, consultants and the public. Under the guidance of the Planning Archaeologists they may respond to applications and proposals relating to planning applications and other land-use changes, and maintain databases and other records.
Applicants should have a degree or equivalent in archaeology and at least six months practical experience of archaeological field work or other archaeological experience. They should also have experience of using databases and GIS systems and understand current legislation and practice with regard to archaeological aspects of planning.
Applicants should be able to make decisions based on sound professional judgements, to work accurately, methodically and to deadlines and have good written and verbal communication skills. They should be able to communicate key concepts to non-specialists, be able to work independently and as part of a team, have a flexible approach to working arrangements, be prepared to work occasional evenings and weekends and have the physical abilities to carry out the duties as set out in the job description. Although the post is based in Warwick, applicants will be required to travel within the county.
