L - P : Archaeology are looking to recruit one, BAJR Level 3 or 3/4 archaeologist for a full-time, long-term position to join L - P : Archaeology’s Chester office (serving the North West and Midlands), reporting to the Partners. The position will cover both field and desk based commercial archaeological work. The successful candidate will be subject to a probationary period.

Applications are to be submitted by email. Your personal statement must address each point of the ‘Candidate Profile’ below, and briefly explain why you are well-suited to the position.


The role will include, but is not limited to, the following duties. It should be noted that L - P : Archaeology will be providing training and support for the successful candidate. Direct experience of all of these tasks is not an essential requirement although experience in any of these areas is desirable.

  • carry out watching briefs
  • carry out evaluations
  • supervise other archaeologists on excavations
  • write reports for field and desk based archaeological work
  • carry out Desk Based Assessments
  • Other tasks as assigned by Partners


Our ideal candidate will aim to meet two sets of criteria, desired and preferred. You must address each point succinctly in your personal statement. Applicants are still encouraged to apply even if there are some elements within these criteria that they do not yet meet.

Desired criteria:

  • at least two years demonstrable experience working to a high standard in professional archaeology(as per BAJR Level ¾)
  • a degree in Archaeology
  • demonstrable experience working within a construction environment
  • an excellent grasp of single context recording (as per Museum of London manual) and other recording strategies employed in rural environments
  • experience excavating deeply stratified urban sites, and/or industrial archaeology
  • experience working in the region covered by the Chester office (NW and Midlands)
  • willingness to be trained in new areas of work and in L - P methods and procedures
  • ability to implement company strategy and policies (Health & Safety, CIfA standards etc.)
  • active in pursuing Continuing Professional Development
  • live within a commutable distance of the Chester office
  • prepared to undertake “away work”
  • valid driver’s licence

Preferred criteria:

  • a postgraduate qualification
  • hold a CSCS card *
  • professional grade membership of the CIfA *

* If they do not hold this item, the successful candidate will be required to obtain these This will be at the company’s expense and with the company’s support.


  • 37.5 hour standard working week
  • 29 days of annual leave (inclusive of bank holidays)
  • Sick leave on an initial accrual of one day per month for a six month qualifying period, and thereafter one month sick pay allowance as per CIfA minima
  • 6% pension contributions after a six month qualifying period, as per CIfA minima
  • PPE will be provided to the successful applicant

L - P : Archaeology are a commercial archaeological unit with offices in Chester, London and Bishops Stortford. The company is a partnership, with a small number of permanent employees. L - P has won awards for its archaeological practice, and it is a CIfA registered organisation. We work largely in the commercial sector, although we are involved in a variety of archaeological research projects, and have a strong Digital Archaeology team. Our Chester office handles work around the North West of England and the Midlands. We provide our employees with support and active encouragement with regards to training and their continuing professional development.
