Oxford Archaeology is one of the largest independent archaeological practices in Europe. Our size and reputation ensures that we work on the most exciting and varied projects, and can offer real opportunities for long term employment and career development. We have offices in Oxford, Lancaster and Cambridge and we are a registered heritage charity.

The position:

We are enjoying a sustained period of growth and as a result we are looking for Field Project Officers to join our expanding fieldwork team working on projects run from our Oxford office. The role is predominantly field based (including ‘away based’ sites) but will involve client level reporting. There will also be opportunities for work within our Post-excavation (Publications) Department and training placements relating to contracts and project management support designed to further future career development.

We are looking for experienced Field Archaeologists who can demonstrate significant experience at Supervisor level or above, and who are able to take on responsibility for large and / or complex pieces of fieldwork and make a significant contribution during the post-excavation process. You must have experience of a range of project types as well as good IT skills and proven writing skills. You will have a good understanding of commercial archaeology in the UK and the Health and Safety legislation relevant to it, as well as the needs and priorities of commercial clients. You will need to be a confident and energetic problem solver with strong communication and interpersonal skills, and have a commitment to engaging the wider community in aspects of our work.

Position requirements:

  • Candidates will have significant experience of professional archaeological fieldwork within the UK.
  • A degree in archaeology will be highly advantageous, as will membership of the CIfA.
  • Candidates will be the lead archaeologist in fieldwork stages of archaeological projects, reporting to a Project Manager who will not normally be based on site.
  • Candidates will co-ordinate and produce unpublished (grey literature) reports and may act as a main author for academic publications.
  • Candidates will take a lead role in performance monitoring and training of staff engaged on their projects.
  • A full driving licence and the ability to drive OA company vehicles is essential, as is a current CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.
  • SSSTS or SMSTS qualifications (or similar) will be advantageous.

In return, we offer an exciting range of employee benefits.

Employee benefits:

  • Competitive salary range up to £27,648 (appointments will be made on the basis of demonstrated ability and previous experience).
  • 35 days holiday (including statutory holidays and concessionary days at Christmas).
  • Company pension scheme.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Training including placements, and opportunities for career progression.
  • 100% of CIfA subscription fees, up to ACIfA level (those at MCIfA level will receive the equivalent of ACIfA level).
  • Free transport from regional offices to sites.
  • High quality personal protective equipment (inc. breathable waterproofs, fleeces etc).
  • Subsistence payment (£15 per night) and free accommodation (B and B / self-catering) provided for away-based projects. No sharing – single rooms only.
  • Overtime will be paid for additional hours worked including travelling time where you are the ‘responsible person’ or driver.
