Wessex Archaeology is one of the UK’s largest and most comprehensive archaeological service providers, and a respected market leader in geoarchaeological and palaeoenvironmental services.
Due to our continuing success, we are seeking to add another geoarchaeologist to our team. Depending on the experience of the candidate, we would be looking to appoint at either Geoarchaeologist, Senior Geoarchaeologist or Principal Geoarchaeologist level. This would be a permanent role with excellent scope for career progression.
The Geoarchaeology and Environmental team forms part of the dynamic and ambitious GeoServices section, which brings together technical experts from a wide range of science disciplines.
Our remit is to seek out interesting projects, engage the scientific curiosity and expertise of our teams, and find innovative solutions to our clients’ archaeological problems.
As a team, we get to design and implement some exciting and unusual projects within terrestrial, coastal and marine environments both at home and internationally, as well as working closely with our fieldwork teams on some of the best archaeological sites across the British Isles.
Your day-to-day activities may vary somewhat depending on your skills and experience, but you can expect to work on a variety of projects through the design, execution, reporting and publication stages, both in the office and in the field.
Common project types you would be involved with include geoarchaeological desk-based assessments, deposit modelling, borehole surveys, laboratory assessments and analyses, and providing geoarchaeological expertise into archaeological fieldwork. We also specialise in producing large-scale geoarchaeological studies for major infrastructure schemes.
We welcome applications from candidates with a solid geoarchaeological experience and knowledge base, together with excellent reporting and communication skills, and a familiarity with commercial practice. You should have a post-graduate qualification in geoarchaeology or related discipline, the confidence to lead a project team when required, and be comfortable editing and synthesising the work of other specialists.
There are a variety of geoarchaeological and palaeoenvironmental sub-specialisms which could be advantageous to your application, and which you could expect to be able to utilise in this role. A strong publication record would be an advantage, but there will be opportunity to further build your bibliography while in post.
Wessex Archaeology’s Geoarchaeology and Environmental team is based at its head office in Salisbury and also operates from its regional offices in Bristol, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Welshpool and Maidstone. The post would be based in our Salisbury office, although the option to relocate to one of our regional offices at a later date could be an option if desired.
In common with all Wessex Archaeology’s investigations, a certain number of projects require staff to work away from their base from time to time. In such cases, accommodation, travel and subsistence are covered by Wessex Archaeology.
