Archaeologists/Experienced Archaeologists
Andover, Cirencester, Exeter & Milton Keynes,
Pay scales £18,691 - £20,548 (dependent on experience)
Permanent and fixed-term contracts available

Cotswold Archaeology is always on the lookout for talented, ambitious and experienced archaeologists to play critical roles in delivering our ever growing portfolio of projects.

Our current workload and committed projects will see us through all of 2017 and beyond. We are currently working on rural and urban projects throughout southern, eastern and central England. All periods of British prehistory and history are covered in our work. Live and recent projects include Palaeolithic sites in Oxfordshire, Newark and West London; Iron Age farmsteads in the West Midlands; a Roman Villa in Gloucestershire; a Saxon cemetery in Devon; medieval townhouses in Oxfordshire and Norfolk; post-medieval glass factories in Bristol; and much, much more!

With long-running projects based further afield, as well as those close to our home offices, there are opportunities for ‘away working’ which comes with accommodation plus subsistence payments.

With over 100 archaeologists currently in the field, and plans to grow even further, we are particularly looking for archaeologists keen to support the development and mentoring of our Trainee Archaeologists.

We are also looking for ambitious archaeologists looking to develop their careers. Our award winning Supervisor Designate Training Scheme is available to all experienced and skilled field staff.

Outreach activities are embedded in all the work we do. There will be opportunities for your time and efforts to be paid in supporting our existing community activities and we champion our colleagues to develop their own community-focused projects.

The Package

Along with a starting salary well above the CIfA minimum, we offer a highly competitive benefits package including:
  • A generous lieu scheme operated for all driving time, and time spent in excess of 45 minutes each way as a passenger, outside of the normal 7.5 hour working day (accumulate up to 10 days additional lieu time annually)
  • 30 days annual leave (including statutory holidays)
  • Generous pension and life assurance schemes
  • Training and CPD opportunities
  • Paid CIfA membership subscription (following qualifying period)
  • Employee Assistance Programme
The Details

Archaeologists (£19,158)
Ideally, candidates for the post of Archaeologist will be able to demonstrate their competence in core fieldwork skills through provision of a completed Archaeology Skills Passport (http://www.archaeologyskills.co.uk/project/core-skills/), or similar training log provided by another employer and completed during previous experience working for commercial British archaeological practices.

Your core skills and experience should include manual excavation and recording of archaeological features, and the recovery of artefacts or samples. You should also be able to complete stratigraphic matrices, photograph archaeological features and sites, use tapes to record measurements accurately, compose accurate measured drawings and take levels.

Experienced Archaeologists (£20,548)
We are also looking for more experienced field archaeologists to assist our Supervisors with the training and mentoring of Trainee Archaeologists and with machine supervision. Candidates with demonstrable and considerable commercial archaeological fieldwork experience, who can provide documented evidence of their proficiency both in core fieldwork skills and machine supervision/watching brief, staff training/development and an aptitude for GPS survey will be eligible for the higher starting salary. In date training in the use of CAT and Genny equipment is also desirable.

For both posts, membership of the CIfA at PCIfA level is desirable, as is possession of a current and valid CSCS Health and Safety Card, and a full driving licence. However, CSCS training can be arranged for those who do not currently possess a valid card. Personal protective equipment will be issued for the duration of employment.

Please note all pay scales quoted are annual equivalents based on a 37.5 hour week.
