The national Scottish Archaeological Research Framework (ScARF) was launched in 2012, providing an overview of the current knowledge about Scottish archaeological research, and identifying questions where further work is needed. Developed, organised and hosted by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, it is available online at http://www.scottishheritagehub.com. Scotland’s Archaeology Strategy highlighted in 2015 the need for regional ScARFs which would reflect local and regional similarities and differences, but be compatible with the national ScARF.
About the Highland Regional ScARF Project
This three year project, coordinated by ARCH and with funding from Historic Environment Scotland and support from Highland Council, will produce a regional ScARF for the Highlands (as defined by the Highland Council boundaries). It will invite contributions from the wider sector, including academics, museums, community groups, educational groups, commercial units and individuals. After an initial symposium, individual panels reflecting the national ones will then be set up, with possible cross-cutting additional ones if necessary.
The initial phase of the project will undertake a review of the current state of archaeological knowledge in the region, using the local Historic Environment Record (HER), CANMORE, a review of grey literature and other data.
ARCH are therefore looking to recruit a Project Officer to undertake this research; who will identify gaps in data, inconsistencies and issues in HER/CANMORE records (and contribute updates to both where needed) and help to provide good data for the panels.
The successful applicant to the post of Project Officer will need to have good research skills and a familiarity with heritage databases, archaeological publications and other sources which can help build a picture of archaeological research in the Highlands from earliest settlement through to the end of the 20th century. The main duties of the post will be to identify gaps in data, inconsistencies and issues in HER/CANMORE records (and contribute updates to both where needed), and help to provide good data for the panels. The main place of work will be Highland Council headquarters in Inverness; occasional weekend work may be required at events.
- Summarise and assess Highland archaeological research using a variety of sources, providing a high quality assessment of knowledge, gaps and possible research questions
- Ensure data is submitted to HER and Canmore where appropriate
- Assist the Project Co-ordinator in organising and running events
- Assist the Project Co-ordinator in outreach to various parties
- Assist in the creation of the archaeological summaries for each period, in particular selecting relevant HER, CANMORE and other data in order to be able to link to other resources. This will involve working with the Project Coordinator and the various panels

Duration: Full time for year 1, half time for year 2. Starting date: April or May 2018
Salary: £19,856 for 35 hour week , with 28 days annual leave and 9 public holidays (pro rata in the second year).
