AOC Archaeology Group is one of the leading commercial archaeology companies in the UK, comprising a highly skilled and dynamic team and offering a full range of archaeological fieldwork, consultancy, post-excavation and public archaeology services.

Ever wondered if there is more to life than sitting at the bottom of a trench in the rain? If you enjoy long walks through the countryside, why not strap a machine to your chest and find some archaeology in the process!

We are looking to expand our successful geophysical survey department, now based in our newest office in Leeds, with the addition of a geophysical surveyor at Site Assistant level. The role will include magnetometer and resistivity survey across the UK at a commercial level, using specialist survey equipment and a GPS.

The successful applicant will have a good background knowledge of British archaeology along with experience at university and or commercial level of undertaking both magnetometer and resistivity surveys. However, those candidates with limited or no experience in the field will be given a full programme of training and support.

A good level of competency in the use of associated survey equipment is desired, but as above, a full programme of training and support will be provided if necessary.

It is vital that you are a good team member with a good level of fitness and a positive and enthusiastic approach to geophysics. You will also need to be self-motivating, able to use your own initiative when required, and have a positive outlook even when the weather is less than desirable.

AOC conducts surveys throughout the UK and as part of this work it will be necessary to travel around the country with overnight stays. All accommodation and a generous nightly subsistence allowance will be provided.

Key requirements:

  • Relevant degree in Archaeology; a specialism in geophysics would be desirable but not necessary,
  • A full clean driving licence is essential. Long journeys to site are often required and it is crucial that you can share the driving responsibilities with your team,
  • CSCS card and CIFA membership is desirable, though AOC will assist with your membership and application if necessary,
  • Computer literacy is essential.
In return, you will be provided with a new full set of waterproof PPE and appropriate footwear, 28 days holiday, and become part of a company pension scheme and a staff training scheme. There will be the opportunity to progress within your job role if the desire is there and occasional office-based tasks will be available. There is also the opportunity for cross-discipline work and you will have the chance to work with the AOC archaeological fieldwork teams.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop you career with a forward-looking archaeological company, with an expanding range of clients and projects, while working for an organisation that believes in investing in and developing its staff in order to achieve the highest professional standards.

AOC Archaeology is a CIfA Registered Organisation and has ISO 9001:2015 certification.
