The aim of the Portable Antiquities Scheme is to record artefacts found by the public to advance our understanding of the past and increase opportunities for active public involvement in archaeology. The Finds Liaison position is funded in partnership with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and Oxfordshire County Council.
About the role:
This is a key role for the protection, understanding and enjoyment of our local heritage. As the Finds Liaison Officer you will develop contacts with members of the public including metal-detector users, explain the aims of the Scheme and the Treasure Act, and identify, research and record finds on the Portable Antiquities Scheme's database.
We are seeking a Finds Liaison Officer to work with the Museums team at Oxfordshire County Council to deliver the Portable Antiquities Scheme across Oxfordshire.
This post will be based at the Oxfordshire Museums Resource Centre, near Standlake, but you will also work flexibly at other locations in Oxfordshire to make contact with finders. You will have experience of artefact identification or finds recording and the ability to communicate with and enthuse a range of people. Good organisational skills and the ability to produce accurate records and reports are also essential for this role. Experience of engaging with clubs, groups, communities or parish councils to encourage people to enjoy and protect their local heritage is desirable.
