The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by the public, including metal detector users, to advance archaeological knowledge and to increase opportunities for active public engagement in archaeology. This data is published on and is made available to the nearest Historic and Environmental Record.

The post is maternity cover for 12 months, the role is part time at 3 days a week. The candidate is expected to run the FLO office to the current working standards. The candidate will be expected to run finds days and the occasional archaeological outreach day to promote the scheme.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in archaeology or a related discipline, or considerable relevant experience, together with experience of finds identification, recording and database entry, and public outreach work in a museum or archaeology environment. The post holder will be highly organised when working under pressure and to deadlines. A high level of PC literacy is key, in particular a sound knowledge of using databases, to allow effective recording of finds on the Schemes finds database.

It is essential that the post holder has the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people and groups including metal detector users to explain the aims of the scheme and the Treasure Act.

BCMT has a team of 4 professional curators including an archaeologist working at the Halton Resources Centre. It is an exciting time to join the BCMT staff team as the Trust is redeveloping the permanent galleries telling the story of Bucks in 2020 and became a new Band 1 National Portfolio Organisation for the Arts Council from April 2018.

The Bucks Post will be based at the County Museum Resource Centre at Halton near Tring. For an informal discussion please contact Arwen Wood – on 01296 325227 or email
