  • Site Assistant Grade 3 (London) £90.30 pd £451.50 pw
  • Site Assistant Grade 2 £76.68 pd £398.40 pw
  • Supervisor £92.35 pd £461.73 pw
  • Project Officer £107.74 pd £538.73 pw
The PCA London, Newark, Durham, Cambridge, Winchester & Warwick offices are recruiting for staff to work on a wide range of fieldwork projects across various locations. Please state on your application which office and role you are applying for.

Site Assistant role (All Offices)
To excavate and record archaeological remains on site effectively and efficiently as part of a team led by a site supervisor and ultimately a project manager. Or, where relevant and with appropriate skills, to undertake other duties such as recording standing structures and landscapes, assisting or undertaking survey. To be mindful of project objectives and programme. Applicants should have at least 3 months of field work experience (although trainee roles may be considered).

Supervisor role (Regional Offices)
To direct archaeological fieldwork projects ensuring efficient delivery whilst being mindful of project objectives, programme and budget. To supervise the excavation and recording of archaeological remains on site effectively and efficiently as part of a team. To supervise the recording of standing buildings, structures or landscapes effectively and efficiently. To manage field staff, including non-excavators in a safe and expeditious manner. To liaise with clients/agents/monitors etc. on site. To prepare written accounts of the fieldwork to the appropriate format. Applicants should have at least 24 months of fieldwork experience.

Project Officer role (Regional Offices)
To assist in the efficient management of projects. To have oversight and control of supervisors and ensure they undertake their designated roles and responsibilities. To direct archaeological fieldwork projects ensuring efficient delivery whilst being mindful of project objectives, programme and budget. To supervise the excavation and recording of archaeological remains on site effectively and efficiently as part of a team. To supervise the recording of standing buildings, structures or landscapes effectively and efficiently. To manage field staff, including non-excavators in a safe and expeditious manner. To liaise with clients/agents/monitors etc. on site. To prepare written accounts of the fieldwork to the appropriate format. Applicants should have at least 24 months of fieldwork experience.

Essential requirements:
  • Degree level education in Archaeology or a relevant subject
  • Good communication skills and plenty of enthusiasm
  • Experience and understanding of UK commercial archaeological projects
  • Understanding and appreciation of health and safety
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Experience of single context planning (for London Site Assistant role)
  • CSCS cards
Desirable requirements:
  • Full and clean UK driving licence
  • First Aid at Work training
  • SSSTS training for supervisory roles

We can offer an initial full-time contract of 3 months. A probationary period of 3 months applies to all new staff. We will seek to extend contracts for staff beyond initial contracts if the work is available.
