We are seeking a small finds specialist at Project Officer level to join our highly successful and respected post-excavation team. The successful candidate will report to the regional Head of Post-Excavation and will contribute to a range of archaeological investigations and projects. The Project Officer will focus on the analysis and reporting of artefacts, especially metal finds and glass.
This is offered as a part-time or full-time role. Working hours can be negotiated, but will be in the range of 15 to 37.5 hours per week). The post will ideally be based at OA South in Oxford, but applications for working at our Cambridge or Lancaster offices will also be considered.
The role will encompass varied responsibilities, the key aspects of which are:
- Analysis of artefact assemblages.
- Reporting of artefact assemblages for grey literature reports and publications (including journal articles, monographs and digital publications).
- Mentoring other staff in aspects of finds work.
- Carrying out other post-excavation tasks as required.
- Demonstrable experience of analysing and reporting on artefact assemblages from Britain. We are specifically looking for candidates with expertise in metal finds, and ideally also glass, of all periods. Additional expertise in other categories of artefact or in other archaeological specialisms would be an advantage.
- Excellent written English.
- The ability to work independently when required but also to operate as part of a team.
- Good organisational and administrative skills.
- The ability to undertake academic research on relevant subjects.
- The ability to operate with regard to health and safety legislation and any related policies and procedures.
Applicants should be members, or eligible for membership, of the CIfA, at least at ACIfA level.
- Experience of writing for publications.
- Experience of stratigraphic analysis and other general aspects of post-excavation work.
- A degree in archaeology, archaeological science or a related discipline.
- The ability to drive.
