The York Archaeological Trust provides a unique employment opportunity, combining world famous heritage attractions, with excavation, survey, consultancy, expert conservation services, research and an unmatched commitment to dissemination and public engagement.

Ready for a new challenge? We are pleased to offer this exciting chance for imaginative and dynamic individuals to take lead roles in a new phase in YAT’s history. Celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2022, we are committed to building on the vision that led from the Coppergate excavation to the Jorvik Viking Centre, DIG, and the annual Viking Festival (https://www.jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk), with a resurgent pioneer spirit of innovation to deliver benefits from archaeology and cultural heritage. To help in our mission, we need some new project managers. Whilst the roles would be attached to either our Nottingham or York offices, we are committed to increased flexibility, both in cross-office working and a hybrid home/office approach. Whilst the role will comprise the conventional delivery of professional archaeological services to a strong client base, you will also have a keen eye for opportunities to deploy YAT’s burgeoning expertise in the delivery of public benefit and positive social impacts through archaeology/heritage. This extends to exciting opportunities to contribute to new initiatives in public engagement, education, research and publication, via conventional and digital platforms, building on the achievements of our world-famous Jorvik Viking Centre.

If you feel you have relevant experience and skills and are ready for change and a fresh role in a unique organisation, or are just curious, get in touch and explore the possibilities.

You:

Yes, applicants should be able to demonstrate the usual core range of abilities, i.e. a thorough understanding of UK commercial archaeology, safe working practices and experience of the costing and management of a wide range of projects of varying complexity and periods with all that entails.  We also want evidence of enthusiasm, a questioning but positive mindset, a proactive approach to challenges, and a keen desire to move beyond the conventional limits of commercial archaeology and shape a better future.

A permanent contract will be available for the successful candidate subject to completion of a probationary period.
