PROJECT ARCHAEOLOGIST

£21,236 – £22,052 (dependent upon experience)

Northern Archaeological Associates is a leading independent heritage and archaeology company based in the attractive historic market town of Barnard Castle in North East England. We are currently looking for Project Archaeologists to join and support our multi-disciplinary teams in the delivery of an interesting range of excavation, geomatic, historic environment, and community engagement projects.

THE ROLE

NAA is seeking suitably qualified and enthusiastic Project Archaeologists to start work from October 2021 on an exciting and broad range of archaeological field projects across North East England, Yorkshire, and Cumbria, including an extensive long-term excavation in the heart of medieval Berwick-upon-Tweed, and large strip, map and record excavations in the Darlington area.

We are looking for individuals who are keen to progress their archaeological careers within a company that values high professional standards and commitment to a health and safety-first approach to all work. Project Archaeologists will work under the instruction and supervision of experienced Project Supervisors or Project Officers.

Candidates will be expected to have demonstrable skills and experience in the excavation and recording of archaeological features and the recovery of artefacts and soil samples. Under supervision, their responsibilities will include completing context sheets, stratigraphic matrices, photographing archaeological features, and composing accurate measured drawings. Previous training in health and safety in the workplace would be advantageous.

A CSCS card is an essential requirement, while a current full driver’s licence and the use of a car are desirable. A minimum of six-months relevant experience is required for the Project Archaeologist role. If you have less than six-months experience, then please see the Careers page on our website for details of other opportunities at NAA. Degree-level qualifications in archaeology or a related subject are preferred, although non-graduates with significant excavation experience are also welcome to apply.

We are offering permanent contracts with a standard six-month probation period. Working hours are based on 37.5-hours per week, Monday to Friday. Starting salary will be commensurate with the expertise and experience of the successful candidates.

A job description for the Project Archaeologist role, and information on NAA and the range of projects the Company undertakes, can be found on our website.
