The York Archaeological Trust, with archaeology and heritage operations now renamed as York Archaeology, are looking for a suitably qualified individual to join our busy conservation team as Assistant Conservator. We operate a commercial service to clients across the UK and abroad, conserving a wide range of artefacts from land-based excavations and museums, and specialising in the investigation and stabilisation of finds from maritime environments and large timbers and other organics from waterlogged sites.

This post will suit a recent graduate with a first degree, or post-graduate qualification, or equivalent, in archaeological conservation.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Carry out the examination, investigation and conservation of finds from external and in-house projects. 
  • Maintain records on the condition and treatment of the finds.
  • Help in the promotion of the work of the team and York Archaeology through participation in public events, training activities and articles in relevant publications.
  • Maintain high standards of work in accordance with the rules and guidelines of professional institutions including ICON and CIfA.
  • Maintain and develop knowledge of new conservation techniques and materials through literature, training and other professional development activities.
  • Assist in the general laboratory housekeeping tasks including the maintenance of equipment, stock control and storage systems.
  • Comply with all York Archaeology  Health and Safety policies and follow safe working practices at all times
