Before you apply for a post, and sign any contract, read this CIfA and PROSPECT approved guide to applying for jobs. What questions to ask, what to expect and what to watch out for. BAJR Guide 54: Applying for a Job in Archaeology

Due to a significant work load, Archaeological Services WYAS are seeking to appoint a number of field archaeologists (Excavation and Geophysics staff) for projects in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the North East. Initial six month contracts will be offered, with permanent roles available in time based on work load and suitable career progression.

For all roles a full UK driving license is essential. A CSCS card is also required but support/training will be offered to those early in their career who are still without this industry qualification.

The positions are based in Morley, West Yorkshire and would be ideal for candidates looking to commute from Leeds, York, Bradford or Sheffield. The majority of our excavation fieldwork is based in Yorkshire and the North East on both rural and urban sites, often within daily commuting distance of our office, although some working away should be expected. Accommodation and subsistence allowances are paid when working away. The geophysics team tends to work nationally, and routine away work should be expected.

ASWYAS are currently excavating a number of open-area excavations in West Yorkshire, with another large site in Sunderland due to start in the next few weeks. Applications from candidates based in the Sunderland area would be welcome.

The geophysics team are currently undertaking a lot of work in Lincolnshire, which can be commuted depending on your location, but otherwise accommodation and subsistence will be provided.

Due to our heavy workload, applications will be assessed as soon as they are received and successful candidates may be appointed before the closing date.

Our standard week is 37 hours. Posts are advertised as full time, but applications from part time staff will also be considered.

All appropriate training and high quality PPE is provided.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates with some experience of archaeological excavation or geophysical survey. Successful applicants should expect that the majority of their time will be in the field, although office-based work (for example helping with reports) might also be available. Training in use of our GPS equipment will be provided.

Applicants for these posts will typically have a degree in archaeology or a related discipline and ideally some experience of commercial archaeology. Opportunities to cross skill, whether excavation or geophysics, will be available.
