Oxford Archaeology is one of the largest independent archaeological practices in Europe. Our size and reputation ensures that we work on the most exciting and varied range of projects, and can offer real opportunities for long term employment and career development.

OA East already have a busy and exciting programme for 2022 and we have upcoming field projects on sites across the whole of the Eastern Region. We are excavating large Iron Age and Roman sites in Northamptonshire near Wellingborough and we are running a number of large scale field projects in Essex, with a large scale ongoing several large fieldwork projects in Norfolk which are likely to run all of the year. Closer to our Cambridge base, we are excavating large Iron Age and Roman settlement sites at Waterbeach, St Neots and Cambourne, and an earlier Neolithic and Bronze Age site in Cambridge.

As you can see we are set to investigate archaeological sites of all periods, and types, and we are particularly interested in experienced candidates based in the Eastern Region.

For Project Officer positions we are looking for Field Archaeologists who can demonstrate significant experience at Supervisor level or above, and who are able to take on responsibility for large and / or complex pieces of fieldwork and make a significant contribution during the post-excavation process. You must have experience of a range of project types as well as good IT skills and proven writing skills. At OA we encourage and train our Project Officers to develop skills as both leaders of fieldwork teams and in writing up the results of this work and we will be looking for experience and potential in both areas.

Position requirements:

  • The role will be both field and office based.
  • Candidates will have significant experience of professional archaeological fieldwork within the UK or Irish commercial environment.
  • Candidates will be the lead archaeologist in fieldwork stages of archaeological projects, reporting to a Project Manager who will not normally be based on site.

  • Candidates will take a lead role in performance monitoring and training of staff engaged on their projects.
  • A full clean driving licence is essential for field posts, as is a current CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.
  • SSSTS or SMSTS qualifications (or similar) will be advantageous.
  • A degree in archaeology or related earth science discipline will be highly advantageous, as will membership of the CIfA at ACIfA level.

In return, we offer an exciting range of employee benefits.

Employee benefits:
