Oxford Archaeology is one of the largest independent archaeological practices in Europe. Our size and reputation ensures that we work on the most exciting and varied range of projects, and can offer real opportunities for long term employment and career development.

At the 2016 CIfA Conference our Graduate Trainee programme was Highly Commended in the Archaeology Training Forum Awards. We have inducted over 100 trainees into the programme since early 2014, and many of them are still working for us, now as experienced excavators and supervisors.

OA East
OA East has a busy programme through the summer and autumn and we are looking for experienced staff to join our field teams at all levels. We have field projects underway on rural sites across the East Midlands and East of England and we are particularly interested in candidates based in Cambridgeshire although we also have projects in Northamptonshire.   We also have some 'away' deployments in Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire and candidates based in those areas or wishing to be deployed there with accommodation should also consider applying.

OA South
OA South has a full and exciting work programme for the coming months with a range of both rural and urban sites covering a variety of different time periods. We have local projects in and around Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties, and for those who like to see different parts of the country we also have opportunities in Dorset and Gloucestershire amongst others. Highlights include Iron Age and Roman settlements and prehistoric landscapes.

OA North
OA North has a full programme of work in the North West, with sites that range from the prehistoric period through to pottery production sites dating to the Industrial/modern period.

We operate a policy of single rooms for all away-based staff.

Position requirements:

  • A degree in archaeology, or equivalent academic knowledge and practical ability.
  • A full clean driving licence is desirable.
What we offer:
  • A documented training programme.
  • Mentoring and assessment by experienced OA field staff.
  • A structured, supported route to membership of CIfA at PCIfA level.
For further details of the Training Programme and Career Path please visit our website

Successful candidates will be offered a 12-week contract (37.5 hours per week) on the starting salary level, with a twelve week extension, at the higher salary level (subject to availability of work) to allow completion of the Training Programme. Staff who successfully complete the scheme will, subject to the availability of work, be offered permanent contracts at Archaeologist level and will continue on our training scheme for Archaeologists which provides a clear career path to progress to Assistant Supervisor when the required levels of experience are reached.
