We are seeking a Historic Environment Record Officer to work as a key member of The Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service Team to support the management of change by providing access to information relating to the historic environment of London.
You will be part of a friendly team that maintains and develops the London Historic Environment Record in line with national standards and benchmarks, ensuring that it contributes to the effective use of the planning system at strategic and local levels, and provides advice to owners and others on the balanced management of the historic environment.

This is a fixed term contract role till end of March 2021 based in London but home working whilst COVID restrictions are in place.
What you will be doing:
As part of this team, the Historic Environment Record Officer will support the Historic Environment Record Manager (HER Manager) by continuously maintaining and developing the Historic Environment Record (HER) for London in accordance with the London Historic Environment Record Development Plan. You will contribute to promoting and ensuring accessibility to the London HER to champion understanding and promote good stewardship of the historic environment of the capital, including responding to enquiries for searches of the record and assisting with the management of volunteers.
You will support the HER Manager with building effective working relationships with historic environment specialists and other partners to identify relevant sources of information relating to the historic environment and ensure that it is incorporated into the London HER.
Supporting the HER Manager in maintaining the HER, you will be adding new information from a range of sources and ensuring that information is accurate, comprehensive and up to date. As the first point of contact for those who wish to access HER information, both within Historic England and externally, you`ll provide assistance, interpretation and advice to users. You will also be responsible for supporting the supervision and training of volunteers and placement students involved in Historic Environment Record projects, with support from your manager.
Who we are looking for:
- Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject or significant experience in a relevant field
- Experience of working with a Sites and Monuments or Historic Environment Record
- Experience of investigations involving historical research, analysis, surveying and recording and/or archaeological fieldwork
- Ability clearly and accessibly to synthesise information relating to the historic environment
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Experience of community engagement activities, including working with volunteers
