About the Project

Established in 1996, SHARP (Sedgeford Historical and Archaeological Research Project) is one of the largest independent archaeological projects in Britain and is firmly rooted in the local community.

SHARP was set up without specific project designs – and continues to operate that way today – but has a broad objective of understanding human settlement and land usage within the north-west Norfolk parish of Sedgeford. We have undertaken a wide range of excavation and research projects from an Early Bronze Age crouch-burial through to a First World War aerodrome.

In addition to our research, SHARP has always placed great emphasis on archaeological education and development. Since 1996, thousands of people have arrived at our Boneyard Field site to excavate, carry out research, or take one of our many courses. Many archaeologists got their start at SHARP. Large numbers of these people now work today in a variety of roles in commercial archaeology, academic research, and the heritage sector.

Our courses and excavation opportunities available for the 2026 season. We don’t always offer the same courses every year, so if there is something you are specifically looking for that is not offered here, please contact bookings@sharp.org.uk for more details.

SHARP aims to keep its prices down to remain accessible for all, but as a charity we must review our costs each year. Therefore we are no longer offering a concession rate, as our new booking system is offering prices as low as we can afford to. We do however offer an Early Bird Rate which applies to all week-long bookings until Wednesday 1st April 2026. The discount is applied automatically when booking via the website, but bookings by form and bank transfer can also take advantage of this deal, when they send a booking and lay down the initial deposit. If you feel you can contribute more to SHARP, and help us provide more opportunities to others, we always welcome donations.

SHARP does offer financial support for excavation and our courses through the John Hensby Bursary. For more information please visit The John Hensby Fund
